It’s an age-old question that divides the nation. It can start great debates and has school kids driving their parents mad. We’ve all had the conversation at some point, happy to give our opinion and usually showing extreme loyalty to one group. The question I’m talking about – cat or dog, what is the better pet? It’s a discussion that has been around since man first decided to allow our furry friends in to the home and treat them like one of the family. So when you see the puppies for sale sign or the kitten for sale sign, what should you choose?

As a person who has had many cats in their lifetime, I have to show my loyalty to my feline companions and argue that cats make the better pet. Here are some of the reasons why I think so:
- Cats are more independent.
A cat eats when it wants to, plays when it wants to and sleeps when it wants to. They have their own timetable and approach life with a more carefree attitude. For this reason they are less likely to get as upset as a dog if you don’t have the same kind of time for them in a day. Dogs on the other hand are very needy and are less likely to withstand days where you not pamper them as much as they’re used to. This is often one reason why so many dog lovers turn their noses up at cats, seeing their independence as being a cold and fickle animal. However that’s not the case as cats are extremely affectionate and will become very attached to their owners. Cats are also known to grieve when someone dies and often decline in health or energy after the death of their owner or family member.
- Cats can look after themselves
Will you really have the time to look after a dog properly? Will you be able to walk it two or three times a day in spite of the heavy downpour of rain, hail or snow? For those who cringe at the thought of this then cats are definitely the way forward as cats can set off on their own adventures and only require their litter box to be emptied twice a week. If you have to travel for a few days then a cat will be fine on its own when you’re away. All you need to do is provide plenty of water and food. Cats are extremely proud animals and hygiene is important to them. Dogs require regular baths and trips to dog groomers. If you want your cat to be even less hassle, then opt for a shorter haired breed when you’re looking at what kind of kittens for sale.
